What is CSR?
A Brief Definition
While CSR does not have a universal definition, many see it as the private sector's way of integrating the economic, social, and environmental imperatives of their activities. As such, CSR closely resembles the business pursuit of sustainable development and the triple bottom line. In addition to integration into corporate structures and processes, CSR also frequently involves creating innovative and proactive solutions to societal and environmental challenges, as well as collaborating with both internal and external stakeholders to improve CSR performance.
"A large corporation is simply a microcosm of society. If environmental awareness is growing in society, if a sense of social responsibility is growing in society, these things will be reflected in the workforce."
United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, Nitin Desai.
What is Sustainable Development?
Sustainable development means different things to different people, but the most frequently quoted definition is from the report Our Common Future (also known as the Brundtland Report):
"Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
Sustainable development focuses on improving the quality of life for all of the Earth's citizens
without increasing the use of natural resources beyond the capacity of the environment to supply them indefinitely.
It requires an understanding that inaction has consequences and that we must find innovative ways to change institutional structures and influence individual behaviour. It is about taking action, changing policy and practice at all levels, from the individual to the international.

Preservation of biodiversity is an additional element often considered part of CSR:
What is Biodiversity?
"Biological diversity" means the variability among living organisms from all sources including, inter alia, terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are part; this includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems.
